History of the Chapel
In the 1960s, Edith Davis Eve offered Penn State Altoona a gift of $125,000, with the stipulation that the money be used to construct a chapel for all faiths and that the gift be matched. The Chapel, a one-story brick building with a sixty-five-foot tower, was completed in 1970.
Edith Davis Eve was born in Altoona in 1873 to a family of educators. She attended the Altoona schools, graduated from the Philadelphia School of Design, and later studied at a kindergarten training school in Michigan. She taught kindergarten in Altoona for several years, then moved to Augusta, Georgia, in 1908 after marrying Oswell B. Eve. She taught kindergarten in Georgia for thirty years, then returned to Altoona in 1939 after retirement. The Edith Davis Eve Chapel epitomizes Mrs. Eve’s appreciation of beauty, her spiritual devotion, and her deep interest in education.
Chapel Facilities
The Chapel tower contains a fifty-bell carillon and is adorned with stained-glass windows. The sanctuary contains an altar area, choir loft, Yamaha Clavinova organ, and seating for 125–150. Located elsewhere in the building are office spaces for the chaplains, a social room, coat racks, and restrooms.
Use of the Chapel
Weddings, Christenings, Baptisms, Memorials
Eligibility
Anyone may schedule a Saturday—or weekday during summer months—wedding, christening, or baptism in the Edith Davis Eve Chapel.
