The following areas should be assessed for each performance or exhibition: artistry, technique, and engagement with the audience. If a student/group received perfect scores the total would be 20 points.


Artistry

To weigh this category most heavily, multiply this score by 2.

Excellent 5

  • The work of art reflects knowledge of its tradition and an innovative engagement with that tradition
  • The work of art evokes a significant response (emotional and/or intellectual) from its audience

Good 4

  • The work of art reflects some knowledge of its tradition and an engagement with that tradition
  • The work of art evokes some response (emotional and/or intellectual) from its audience

Limited 3

  • The work of art reflects a limited knowledge of its tradition and a limited engagement with that tradition
  • The work of art does not consistently evoke a response (emotional and/or intellectual) from its audience

Poor 2

  • The work of art does not reflect a knowledge of its tradition or an engagement with that tradition
  • The work of art does not evoke a response (emotional and/or intellectual) from its audience

Technique

Excellent 5

  • The artist has chosen the correct (though potentially surprising and/or especially challenging) techniques by which to execute his/her work of art
  • The artist shows a mastery of those techniques
  • The artist displays a capacity to innovate upon or experiment with those techniques

Good 4

  • The artist has chosen the correct techniques by which to execute his/her work of art
  • The artist shows some mastery of those techniques
  • The artist displays some capacity to innovate upon or experiment with those techniques

Limited 3

  • The artist has chosen workable techniques by which to execute his/her work of art
  • The artist shows limited mastery of those techniques
  • The artist displays little capacity to innovate upon or experiment with those techniques

Poor 2

  • The artist has chosen techniques by which to execute his/her work of art adequately
  • The artist shows some difficulty using those techniques
  • The artist displays no capacity to innovate upon or experiment with those techniques

Engagement with Audience in both Performance (if applicable) and Discussion of Piece

Excellent 5

  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art is confidently (even enthusiastically) offered
  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art actively engages the audience’s emotions and/or intellect
  • Discussion of the piece shows insightful engagement with the artistic tradition(s) with which the student engages, an advanced ability to articulate the techniques used to create the piece, and a thoughtful consideration of the piece’s goal in terms of audiences
  • Responses to Q&A are clear, detailed, and show active engagement with the material

Good 4

  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art is confidently offered
  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art engages the audience
  • Discussion of the piece shows serious engagement with the artistic tradition(s) with which the student engages, a strong ability to articulate the techniques used to create the piece, and a clear consideration of the piece’s goal in terms of audiences
  • Responses to Q&A are clear and show engagement with the material

Limited 3

  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art is clearly offered
  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art does not consistently engages the audience
  • Discussion of the piece shows some engagement with the artistic tradition(s) with which the student engages, an ability to articulate the techniques used to create the piece, and some consideration of the piece’s goal in terms of audiences
  • Responses to Q&A are relatively clear

Poor 2

  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art suggests uncertainty with the material
  • Performance and/or discussion of the piece of art does not engage the audience
  • Discussion of the piece shows limited engagement with the artistic tradition(s) with which the student engages, some difficulty in articulating the techniques used to create the piece, and little consideration of the piece’s goal in terms of audiences
  • Responses to Q&A are not clear
