Penn State Altoona athletics round-up Jan. 19-26

Penn State Altoona men's volleyball, the defending North Eastern Athletic Conference champions, opened the 2018 season by going 4-0 in the Misericordia University Cougar Kickoff Classic on Jan. 19-20.

Men’s basketball

Penn State Altoona 95, Hilbert College 89

Senior guard/forward Ishimeal Nance (Muscle Shoals, Alabama/Muscle Shoals) led Penn State Altoona in scoring in the team’s win over Hilbert on Saturday, Jan. 20, while senior forward Dequan Jackson (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/Murrell Dobbins) scored 21 points and senior guard Rich Bouknight (Norristown, Pennsylvania/Norristown) added 19 points.

With four wins in the season-opening Misericordia Cougar Kickoff Classic on Friday, Jan. 19, and Saturday, Jan. 20, Lions volleyball won the tournament. Sophomore setter Tommy Kisick (Latrobe, Pennsylvania/Greater Latrobe) was named the classic’s MVP and later took Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors. In those four matches at Misericordia, Kisick tallied 71 assists (6.45 assists per set).

Women’s basketball

Hilbert College 61, Penn State Altoona 51

Penn State Altoona 96, Hood College 66

Sophomore guard Finnley Christine (Tyrone, Pennsylvania /Tyrone) averaged a team-best 19.0 points per game in her team’s last two contests, while fellow sophomore guard Kaley Strittmatter (Williamsburg, Pennsylvania/Penn Cambria) added 12.0 points per game and a team-high 9.5 rebounds per game.
