Hunter Breon, Richard Carey Selected for ECAC Weekly Awards

DANBURY, Conn. – Penn State Altoona baseball’s sophomore shortstop Hunter Breon (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) and freshman catcher Richard Carey (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) picked up two more awards on Tuesday for their excellent performances at the plate last week, as they were chosen to receive a pair of recognitions from the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Breon was named the ECAC Division III South Region Player of the Week, while Carey was awarded the ECAC Division III South Region Rookie of the Week honor. The two Lions helped the Penn State Altoona baseball team go 6-0 last week, including a sweeping a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheaders.

In last Monday’s doubleheader sweep at non-conference opponent Saint Vincent College, Breon combined to hit 3-for-8 in the two games with four runs scored, two runs batted in, and one double. In Thursday’s pair of victories at AMCC opponent Mount Aloysius College, the sophomore batted 6-for-8 with four runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, one triple, one walk, and one stolen base. In Saturday’s sweep at AMCC foe Medaille College, Breon combined to go 5-for-7 with five runs scored, five RBI, two doubles, and two walks.

For the week, Breon hit .609 (14-for-23) for the Lions with 13 runs scored, 10 RBI, five doubles, one triple, three walks, and one stolen base. He posted an on-base percentage of .630 and slugged .913. On Monday, Breon was announced as the AMCC’s Player of the Week.

Carey went 3-for-3 in game two of Monday’s doubleheader at St. Vincent with one RBI, one run scored, one walk, and one stolen base. In game one of Thursday’s twinbill at Mount Aloysius, he batted 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Starting both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at Medaille, Carey combined to hit 6-for-9 with three runs scored, one double, one RBI, and one walk.

On the week, Carey hit .688 (11-for-16) for the Lions with five runs scored, five RBI, two walks, one double, and one stolen base. He posted an on-base percentage of .684 and slugged .750. Earlier today, he was picked to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.

This is the first time that Breon and Carey have picked up weekly awards from the ECAC.

Penn State Altoona baseball wraps up its regular season this Friday, May 4 with a doubleheader at AMCC opponent Pitt-Bradford, with game one starting at 1:00 p.m.
