Health Services staff can assist you with your women's health needs. This includes routine pelvic exams (including pap smears), breast examinations, evaluation and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy testing, and contraception. We offer caring, confidential services to Penn State women.
Appointments
For women scheduling their first annual exam, please visit the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists website, which explains what the exam involves and may help alleviate any anxiety.
If you cannot keep your appointment, please call in advance to avoid the no-show fee. This also enables us to open the appointment time for another student. Please arrive twenty minutes early to fill out paper work for your visit.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Whether you are concerned about having had unprotected intercourse and contracting a possible sexually transmitted infection, or you would simply like more information, visit the Center for Disease Control's website to learn more about STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, herpes, HIV/AID, HPV, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
Emergency Contraception
Abstinence or consistent use of a dependable birth control method before or during sexual intercourse is the best way to protect yourself from an unplanned pregnancy. But sometimes circumstances do not fit our best intentions. Perhaps a condom broke or slipped off. Maybe you had sex when you didn't expect to and didn't use any birth control, or maybe you forgot to take your birth control pills or were forced to have sex.
If you have had unprotected intercourse and are certain you do not want to be pregnant, emergency contraceptive pills may be something to consider. This treatment provides birth control after sex and, though not advised as an ongoing method, may be a good choice in some circumstances.
