Double Majoring in English

Penn State Altoona Clock

Majoring in two subjects allows you to:

  • combine interests unique to you
  • capitalize on multiple strengths and passions
  • learn diverse ways of interpreting the world
  • work closely with faculty from two different disciplines
  • develop more skills to meet the needs of emerging professions
  • enhance your résumé

A double major typically does not require more time or carry an additional cost—you only complete the Penn State general education curriculum once!

For more information, contact English Program Coordinator Erin Murphy at [email protected].

Haldan Jacobson

Political science taught me how to rationalize and interpret others’ actions, while studying English taught me not only how to better express myself but to be more thoughtful toward, and open to, understanding others’ experiences. I couldn’t have picked two better majors to train a rational mind as well as an expressive, empathetic heart.

Haldan Jacobson, '21, English and political science, Website writer for The Excellence Center in Halle, Germany, and special projects associate for Reading Partners in Washington, D.C.
Jim Miller

Both majors feed off one another and allow a student to perform their very best work across multiple disciplines. That ultimately results in a far richer experience overall. Double majoring really helps students find themselves.

Jim Miller, English and history, class of 2023, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site intern
