Catcher Cumming Selected AMCC Baseball Player of the Week

NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. – Penn State Altoona baseball’s junior first baseman Catcher Cumming (Altoona, PA/Altoona) was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week on Monday, April 8, 2019.

Cumming had a monster week at the plate for the Lions, driving in 16 runs and recording three multi-hit games to help Penn State Altoona go 4-2 in AMCC play.

In game one of Tuesday’s home doubleheader with Pitt-Bradford, Cumming went 2-for-3 with a double. In game two of the twinbill, he was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a hit-by-pitch.

On Saturday, Cumming and the Lions traveled to play Alfred State College in a doubleheader. In game one, Cumming went 1-for-2 with two RBI, two sacrifice flies, and one run scored. In game two of the set, he was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and one hit-by-pitch.

Cumming saved his biggest performances for Sunday’s doubleheader at Hilbert College. In game one, the junior hit 2-for-4 with eight RBI, two runs scored, a grand slam, a double, and a stolen base. In game two, he went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored, two walks, and a double. Cumming’s eight RBI in game one tied the Penn State Altoona single game record for RBI, and his 12 total RBI in the doubleheader set a new record for the most runs driven in during a doubleheader in program history.

On the week, Cumming hit .500 (10-for-20) with 16 RBI, eight runs scored, three doubles, two home runs, two walks, two hit-by-pitch, two sacrifice flies, and a stolen base. In the field, Cumming was perfect, recording 50 putouts and one assist in 51 chances.

This is Cumming’s first AMCC Player of the Week award this season.

Penn State Altoona baseball is 15-9 overall, including 6-2 in the AMCC. The Lions’ next games are tomorrow, Tuesday, April 9, when the team hosts non-conference opponent Penn College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
