General Education Information

EMET General Education Information (Adobe PDF)506.67 KB

Foundations

Writing, speaking, and quantification courses help develop the foundations to set forth oral and written arguments persuasively and apply mathematical and statistical skills in solving real-world problems.

15 credits total required and all must be completed with a grade of C or better. Credits completed at other institutions do not transfer unless a C or better was earned and therefore are acceptable.

Writing/Speaking—9 credits

  • ENGL 15 (3 credits)
  • CAS 100 (3 credits)
  • EET 212W (3 credits)

Quantification—6 credits

  • MATH 210 (3 credits)
  • MATH 211 (3 credits)

Breadth of Knowledge

Each Knowledge Domain provides a unique framework to examine the world. 15 credits total required. No Inter-Domain courses; no Move 3 or World Language substitutions.

  • GH: Humanities (3 credits)
  • GA: Arts (3 credits)
  • GS: Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 credits)
  • PHYS X50: Natural Sciences (3 credits)
  • GHW: Health and Wellness (3 credits)

Integrative Studies

Just as each Knowledge Domain provides a unique perspective to examine the world, there is additional value in being able to identify and synthesize information across domains.

Select 6 credits of either Inter-Domain coursework or Linked courses. Must select one or the other. Linked courses should be verified as an approved pair using the Linked Course search tool in LionPATH.

Inter-Domain

Two courses, 3 credits each.

Linked

  • PHIL 233Z (3 credits)
  • STS 245Z (3 credits)

Exploration

Select additional courses to explore or satisfy other academic goals such as minors, certificates, etc.

Select 9 credits that may include up to 6 credits of GN and up to 3 credits of the other domains (GH, GA, GS, GHW). If a GN course is not listed in the Integrative Studies section, 3 credits of GN must be selected here.

  • PHYS X51 (3 credits)
  • EMET GN3 (3 credits)
  • GH, GA, GS, or GHW

The General Education Knowledge Domain requirement (including Breadth of Knowledge, Integrative Studies, and Exploration) is:
9 credits GN, 6 credits GA, 6 credits GH, 6 credits GS, 3 credits GHW. Flexibility of the requirements, including upper-level substitution, world language substitution, or Move-3, can be discussed with your adviser. These substitutions require both approval by the college of graduation and a manual update to your degree audit.

Additional University Requirements

9–12 credits required

  • US: United States Cultures (3 credits)
May double count in General Education, major, B.A. requirement, or elective.
  • IL: International Cultures (3 credits)
May double count in General Education, major, B.A. requirement (except Other Cultures), or as an elective. Study Abroad courses often satisfy this requirement.
  • EET 212W: Writing Across the Curriculum (3 credits)
Typically prescribed in courses required for a major.
  • First-Year Experience: Waived
Requirement depends on which campus you first enrolled.
