ALTOONA, Pa. — A book by Erin Murphy, professor of English at Penn State Altoona, has been named to the Julie Suk Award longlist for the best book of poetry published by a literary press in 2024. The award is sponsored by Jacar Press.

“Fluent in Blue” examines blue in its many permutations: color, emotion, mental health, nature, politics, and music. Released by Grayson Books in April 2024, “Fluent in Blue” was previously a finalist for Ohio University’s Hollis Summers Poetry Prize, the Alice James Award sponsored by Alice James Books, and the Word Works Books Washington Prize.

The winner of the Julie Suk Award will be announced in the fall.

Murphy is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, chapbooks and anthologies, with three additional books forthcoming within the next year. She is the poet laureate of Blair County, poetry editor of “The Summerset Review,” and Penn State’s 2023-25 Mellon Academic Leadership Fellow for the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
