ALTOONA, Pa. — Students in Penn State Altoona’s Agricultural Ethics and Sustainability Ethics courses have organized several volunteer opportunities and donation drives for the next several weeks.

Start by cleaning out those closets and giving gently used clothing to a collection drive for Altoona’s teen shelter. From now through April 12, donations can be dropped into collection boxes in the Slep Student Center and in the common areas of the residence halls.

Donations also are needed for Penn State Altoona’s Paws for Hope, a collection drive for the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society. Now through April 12, items such as dog and cat food, paper towels, toilet paper, Odoban bleach, laundry detergent, and dish and hand soap can be dropped off in boxes set up in the Hawthorn Building, Slep Student Center, Smith Building and the Devorris Downtown Center.

Gently used coffee and tea mugs are being collected for use at Penn State Altoona’s upcoming Ag Day. Attendees will be able to plant their own herb or flower in the mugs. Drop-off sites are at various locations around campus.

On Thursday, March 27, head to the Center for Community Action, 1809 11th St., in Altoona, and help stuff backpacks for the Altoona Mountain Lion Backpack Program from 5 to 7 p.m. The program provides Altoona Area School District elementary school students with nutritious food for the weekend when other food sources may not be available.

On Tuesday, April 8, from noon to 1 p.m., help clean up the litter along Grandview Road. Meet at the Hawthorn bus stop. Materials and supplies will be provided.

On Wednesday, April 9, a campus cleanup will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. along Gwin Road and Campus View Drive. Students, faculty and staff volunteers should meet at Spring Run Stadium. Materials and supplies will be provided.
