Penn State Altoona student-athlete Gabriel Lopez, of Wilmette, IL, was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. — Penn State Altoona student-athlete Gabriel Lopez, of Wilmette, Illinois, was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Lopez helped lead the Penn State Altoona men’s tennis team to victory on Sunday afternoon, when the Lions returned to action with their first match of the spring semester at nonconference opponent Saint Vincent College. Lopez recorded wins in both doubles and singles play.

In doubles, Lopez teamed up with Nick Beard, of Manns Choice, for a 6-3 win in the No. 2 match — Penn State Altoona’s lone doubles victory of the day. In singles, Lopez had the match-clinching win for the Lions, winning two tiebreakers to earn a victory in the No. 5 spot by a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 13-11 decision.

Penn State Altoona defeated St. Vincent 5-2 in the match.

Lopez is 4-1 in doubles matches this season, and he leads the Penn State Altoona men’s tennis team in doubles wins. In singles, Lopez is 1-1, with Sunday’s victory being the first of his collegiate career.

Lions men’s tennis is 4-1 this season and returns to action on March 15, traveling to face nonconference opponent Penn College at 2 p.m.
