ALTOONA, Pa. — Amanda Brandt, a University police officer, and Nathan E. Kruis, assistant professor of criminal justice at Penn State Altoona, recently presented at Claysburg-Kimmel School (CKS) District’s Career Day. The annual event gives CKS students the opportunity to learn about different careers from experts and professionals who work in the field.
The duo taught students about various career paths in criminal justice.
“I went through the three main components of the American criminal justice system and taught students about different careers in each area. Then, I talked about the research I do and jobs in the research sector,” said Kruis. “We both talked about how the system is really designed to help people. I think the students appreciated that.”
Kruis further informed students about the amount of open, viable and rewarding careers in the field waiting to be filled by skilled people.
Brandt talked about her experiences as a police officer and explained how officers work to keep the public safe and help those in need.
She also spoke about drugs and alcohol and making good decisions about drinking and driving. Students participated in a series of activities wearing goggles that simulate the effects of intoxication.
“It was a good day,” said Kruis. “The students gave us positive feedback. Some of them even expressed interest in becoming a police officer.”
