Todd Davis, professor of English and environmental studies, has won Sport Literate’s nonfiction award for his essay, “Lessons.”
Davis's personal essay about playing high school football in the early 1980s in a northern Indiana factory town offers a meditation upon the inherent violence in the sport of football and its place in working-class culture. Michael Steinberg, the founding editor of the journal Fourth Genre and a leading figure in the field of creative nonfiction, was the judge for the award, which comes with a $500 prize.
Sport Literate, a literary journal with a focus on sport and diversion, has had essays selected for inclusion in The Best American Sports Writing and The Best American Essays.
