RTE 302 class working with Total Stations

Students in Penn State Altoona's Rail Engineering Program work with total stations as part of RTE 302: Railroad Track Location, Construction and Maintenance. A total station is a state-of-the-art land surveying tool used in the railroad industry (and across civil engineering) to measure track features such as curvature and gradient. The Everett Railroad Company provided track time for this railroad track lab course. The tracks are always properly safe-guarded by the railroad and a job safety briefing is conducted before each lab class.

When we flush a commode or pull the plug in the sink, that directly effects the water that will eventually come out the other end. When water enters the waste water treatment plant at the University Park campus, it is decontaminated and rendered almost pure. While it is safe to discharge into local streams, Penn State has been spraying the clean water onto open fields, recharging the water table.
