Physical Activity Courses

The Kinesiology Physical Activity Program (KPAP) are service courses offered through the kinesiology program.

KINES 001-096 are courses that are approved to assist in fulfilling the GHA component of the General Education requirement for baccalaureate students. Per Penn State's General Education Policy, all students are required to earn three credits of Health and Physical Activity (GHA).

The courses offer quality movement experiences and are designed to promote an active and healthful lifestyle across one's lifespan. For more information on the KPAP program, visit the KPAP website.

Physical Activity Courses

The following physical activity courses are traditionally offered at Penn State Altoona. Course availability may vary.

KINES 025 (GHA) Introduction to Court Sports (1.5 credits)

A course designed to introduce students to various court sports such as tennis, racquetball, handball, squash, and/or badminton.

KINES 027 (GHA) Badminton 1 (1.5 credits)

The course promotes health, fitness, and enjoyment of the game of badminton.

KINES 029 (GHA) Golf I (1–1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students an understanding of and a proficiency in golf skills, rules, and etiquette.

KINES 044 (GHA) Racquetball I (1–1.5 credits)

The course promotes health, fitness, and enjoyment of the game of racquetball.

KINES 047 (GHA) Beginning Swimming (1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students the skills and knowledge necessary to be safe in shallow and deep water.

KINES 048 (GHA) Tennis I (1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students an appreciation of and proficiency in the skills, rules, and regulations of tennis.

KINES 056 (GHA) Introduction to Martial Arts (1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students an introduction to martial arts, and the use of martial arts for lifelong fitness.

KINES 061 (GHA) Fitness Theory and Practice (3 credits)

Students will learn about the science of fitness/wellness; evaluate their present fitness levels and create a personal fitness plan.

KINES 063 (GHA) Aerobic Dance (1.5 credits)

A course designed to involve students in daily aerobic activity while teaching the fundamentals of overall health and well-being.

KINES 065 (GHA) Jogging (1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students an understanding of and the ability to establish an exercise program involving jogging.

KINES 068 (GHA) Strength Training (1.5 credits)

Designed to improve students' muscular strength/endurance, teaches students how to develop an effective personal strength/endurance training program for lifelong fitness.

KINES 072 (GHA) Fitness Walking (1–1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students an understanding of and proficiency in fitness walking.

KINES 077 (GHA) Yoga 1 (1.5 credits)

A course designed to give students an understanding of and proficiency in yoga.

KINES 077A (GHA) Advanced Yoga (1.5 credits)

A course designed to expand on a student's fundamental understanding of and proficiency in yoga. Prerequisite: KINES 077

KINES 090A (GHA) Introduction to Team Sports/Indoor - Volleyball (1.5 credits per semester, maximum of 9)

A course designed to introduce students to the team sport of volleyball.

KINES 090B (GHA) Introduction to Team Sports/Indoor - Basketball (1.5 credits per semester, maximum of 9)

A course designed to introduce students to the team sport of basketball.

KINES 091A (GHA) Introduction to Team Sports/Outdoor - Soccer (1.5 credits per semester, maximum of 9)

A course designed to introduce students to the outdoor team sport of Soccer.

KINES 091D (GHA) Introduction to Team Sports/Outdoor - Ultimate Frisbee (1.5 credits per semester, maximum of 9)

A course designed to introduce students to the outdoor team sport of Ultimate Frisbee.
