Motorheads: Engineering Program in Southern Germany

March 7–15, 2020

Program Description

This program is designed for Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology (EMET) majors at Penn State Altoona. The focus of the program is to relate the work that they have done in their design and engineering classes to the hands-on application of the automotive industry in Germany.

Academic Requirements

GPA of 2.5 or greater

Prerequisite or Concurrent:

  • EMET 215 or IET 215 (Production Design) and EET 275 (PLC’s)

Students will be responsible for the following:

  • Satisfactory completion of study abroad orientation, preparatory meetings
  • Keeping a daily journal while abroad
  • Write a pre-trip and final paper about their experience on a topic chosen in conjunction with the program director

Program Costs: $1727–$2198

Costs include

  • 7 nights of hotel stays in various locations
  • In-country transportation
  • Daily breakfast, welcome dinner, and farewell dinner
  • Visit the following plants:
    • BMW
    • MAN Munich
    • Mercedes-Benz
    • John Deere
  • Tours of the following sites:
    • Mike’s Bike Tour through Munich
    • Castle Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau
    • Mercedes-Benz Museum
    • Auto and Technik Museum
    • Walking tour of Heidelberg

Other Expenses

  • $1000 - Airfare
  • $135 -Passport
  • $150 - Immunizations
  • $150 - Personal expenses

Program costs vary depending on the number of participates and exchange rates,

Registration Process and Deadlines

  • November 15
    • Register for the program online.
      • A limited number of participants will be accepted.
      • Your judicial and academic records will be checked as a part of the registration process
    • Register for spring 2020 EMET 397
  • A $500 deposit will be charged to your student account to hold your place in the program upon your acceptance.
  • February 1
    • Complete Global Programs CANVAS Pre-Departure requirement
    • Complete Travel Safety Network online requirements

Program Leaders

Jordan Bittner
Instructor in Engineering
Ms. Bittner holds her master of science in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University and her bachelor of science from Penn State Altoona in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology. During her time as an undergraduate, she traveled on the first Motorheads in Germany trip in 2010 and then again as a program leader in 2017.

Michael Hicks
Instructor in Electrical Engineering
Mr. Hicks received all three of his engineering degrees from Penn State (MET, EMET, EE). He has taught course material in electrical engineering and computer engineering. His area of focus is in embedded systems and industrial automation.
