ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team was picked ninth in the 2017 edition of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's annual preseason coaches' poll, which was released on Monday.
Penn State Behrend, which won its 12th conference title in 2016, was predicted to repeat as AMCC champions this fall. Pitt-Greensburg, which finished in second place in last year's regular season standings, was voted into second place in the poll. Pitt-Bradford, the third place team in the 2016 standings, was selected third.
Penn State Altoona women's soccer posted a 4-12-1 overall record in 2016, including a 1-7-1 mark in the AMCC. Led by eighth-year head coach Pam Snyder Etters, the Lady Lions will look to find success this fall with a young roster.
Named as a "Player to Watch" for Penn State Altoona this season was senior forward Shoshana Mahoney (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake-Lehman). Mahoney was a second team All-AMCC pick last season after leading her team in goals scored (10), points (22), shots attempted (70), and shots on goal (45).
Penn State Altoona women's soccer opens its 2017 schedule with back-to-back home non-conference games during the first weekend of September. On Friday, September 1, the Lady Lions host Southern Vermont College at 4:00 p.m. The next day, Saturday, September 2, Penn State Altoona welcomes Waynesburg University to campus for a 3:00 p.m. contest. The Lady Lions' AMCC opener is Saturday, September 23 at 3:15 p.m., a road game at Pitt-Bradford.
