DANBURY, Conn. — Penn State Altoona first-year guard/forward Ellie Matthews (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) was announced as the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Division III South Region Rookie of the Month for January on Wednesday, Feb. 9.
Matthews averaged a double-double for the Lions in January, averaging a team-best 16.3 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game in seven contests. She also contributed 2.0 assists per game, 1.3 blocks per game, and 1.0 steal per game. Additionally, Matthews established a new team record, with her 20 rebounds against Pitt-Bradford on January 29 setting a new Penn State Altoona women’s basketball single game record.
Matthews was recognized as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week on January 31.
Through 21 games this season, Matthews currently leads the AMCC in defensive rebounds (160) while also ranking third in blocks (25), fourth in field goals made (110) and total rebounds (193), sixth in rebounds per game (9.2), and 10th in points (250).
Penn State Altoona women’s basketball is 5-16 overall this season, including a 4-9 mark in the AMCC. The Lions’ next game is tonight, Wednesday, February 9 at home against conference opponent Pitt-Greensburg at 5:30 p.m.
