Penn State Altoona English students offer senior presentations

ALTOONA, Pa. — Students enrolled in Assistant Professor of English Kyle King's English 487W course offered senior seminar presentations on Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Mountain View room of Port-Sky Café. The theme of this year’s seminar was “Rhetoric and Literature of Social Movements and Social Change.”

Presenters included the following: 

  • Mary Stewart: "Slave Narrative Rhetoric and the Escape from White Editorship"
  • Maleah Orr: "Analyzing Anti-COVID-19 Vaccine and Anti-Mask Postings on Online Forums in Central Pennsylvania"
  • Timothy Chuhran: "Robespierre, the Bogeyman of Social Movements"
  • Sidra Arshad: "Feminists of Color: Responses to the Whiteness of the Second Wave"
  • Devin Poplin: "Pro- and Anti-ERA Social Movement Leadership in Mrs. America"
  • Jon Ramsey: "Embodied Athlete Activism and the Transcendence of the Black Lives Matter Movement in Professional Sports"
  • Deepesh Shrestha: "Using Graphic Novels to Tell the Story of Social Movement Leaders in John Lewis’s March Trilogy"
  • Paige Parris: "Intergenerational, Intersectional Feminism in Amy Poehler’s MOXiE!"

The event also included the induction of new members of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society. New inductees are Maleah Orr, Carrie Lathero and Whisper Horton.
