Collaboration brings crisis management workshop to first responders, community

Seven students from the Integrated Social Sciences Research Lab at Penn State Altoona recently worked with faculty from the Douglas W. Pollock Center at Penn State Harrisburg and representatives from the Pennsylvania State Police, Penn State Health and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute to provide a free crisis management training workshop to first responders and community members in the Dauphin County region.

Penn State Altoona English faculty members Todd Davis and Erin Murphy will read from their work at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The reading will kick off the fall Hard Freight Café open mic event.

Davis, professor of English and environmental studies, will read from his eighth full-length collection of poetry, “Ditch Memory: New & Selected Poems.” Murphy, professor of English, will read from her ninth poetry collection, “Fluent in Blue.”

Jared Frederick, assistant teaching professor of history at Penn State Altoona, co-authored “Into the Cold Blue: My World War II Journeys with the Mighty Eighth Air Force” (2024, Regnery History) with John Homan, an aviator with the Army Air Forces and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross award for heroism or extraordinary achievement during aerial flight.

Libraries to host World War II memoirist and his co-author for Veterans Day talk

Penn State University Libraries will observe Veterans Day with a talk by a local World War II veteran and the Penn State faculty member who co-authored his memoir. Jared Frederick, assistant teaching professor of history at Penn State Altoona, and John Homan, co-authors of “Into the Cold Blue: My World War II Journeys with the Mighty Eighth Air Force,” will speak about Homan’s experiences in the war at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 in Foster Auditorium on the first floor of Paterno Library. A virtual attendance option is also available.
