Note: As of January 2012. The Faculty Affairs Committee of the Division is examining amendments to this policy.
Extra compensation is provided to faculty members who teach courses above-and-beyond their normal teaching load (typically 18 contacts per year for tenure-line and 24 contacts per year for non-tenure-line). Compensation can take the form of remuneration or banked contacts resulting in a future reduced load. If remuneration is desired, it should be requested in the semester that the overload is occurring so that payment occurs in the same tax year. At present, there are three categories and three different rates for which faculty members are compensated.
Category I. Teaching a non-internship course required by one or more students for graduation in an Altoona College major (such a course may be listed as an Independent Study course but is not for research experience). For example, one of our mathematics majors needs to take MATH 436 to graduate. One of our mathematics faculty members teaches the course as an overload. This faculty member would receive:
(1 student) × (3 credits) × ($1,300 / contact) = $3,900.
In general, the compensation is: (N student-credits) × ($1,300)
Alternatively, they would receive, or bank, a 3-credit course reduction (or equivalent contacts) in a future semester.
Category II. Teaching an internship course (395) that is required for graduation in an Altoona College major. For example, a faculty member directs four students in ENVST 395, each of whom needs the 3 credits of the course in order to complete their graduation requirements. The faculty member teaching these students as an overload would receive:
(1/6) × (4 students) × (3 contacts) × ($1,300 / contact) = $2,600.
In general, the compensation is: (1/6) × (N student credits) × ($1,300)
Alternatively, they would receive, or bank, a 2-credit course reduction (or equivalent contacts) in a future semester.
Category III. Teaching an independent-study course (x96) or research credit (x94) course to a student who desires elective credit (such course taught for the sake of elective research experience cannot count as part of a faculty member’s standard teaching load). For example, a faculty member directs two students in PHYS 296, for 2 credits each. This faculty member would receive:
(1/18) × (2 students) × (2 contacts) × ($1,300 / contact) = $288.89
In general, the compensation is: (1/18) × (N student credits) × ($1,300)
Alternatively, they would receive, or bank, a (4/18)-credit course reduction (or equivalent contacts) in a future semester.
