Dr. Shihui Shen is a professor of rail transportation engineering at Penn State Altoona, a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania, and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She is also a graduate faculty at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State, University Park. Shen received her doctoral degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on infrastructural materials and structures for better durability, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Along with her continued interest in civil material characterization and innovation, Shen is actively involved in pavement modeling and health monitoring using wireless sensors and data-based approaches. Her research has been funded by the state DOTs, NSF, NCHRP, USDOT, FAA, US Army Corps of Engineering, and private sectors. Shen has published more than one hundred peer-reviewed technical papers and reports and serves on many research committees, journal editorial boards, and project panels for the professional community.
