Community Art Classes

Explore your artistic side!

Penn State Altoona is pleased to offer community members opportunities to explore the arts. Courses are available in various types of dance, theatre, and visual arts.

Payment is required on or before the first day of class. Please submit payment to the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts box office at Penn State Altoona, 3000 Ivyside Park, Altoona, PA 16601. For questions, please call 814-949-5452 or email Kylea Myers at [email protected].

The beginner adult rhythm tap class is perfect for those new to tap. It offers a comprehensive introduction to basic steps, rhythmic progressions, and dynamic combinations. No prior experience is required—just bring your enthusiasm and tap shoes!

Course Details

  • Cost: $50 for six one-hour classes
  • Dates: Fridays, August 28, September 4, 11, 18, 25, and October 2
  • Time: 7:00–8:00 p.m.
  • Location: Penn State Altoona, Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts, Dance Studio, room 148, and Wolf Kuhn Theatre.

Register For Beginner Tap Class online

Take a free and open modern dance class with Allied Motion Dance Company for adult community dancers. This monthly opportunity lets you explore modern dance with low pressure and plenty of fun, including floor work, technique, and artistic development. Participants must be 18 or older.

Course Details

  • Cost: Free
  • Dates: Sundays, September 27, October 25, November 29, and December 20
  • Time: 1:00–2:15 p.m.
  • Locations: Penn State Altoona, Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts, Dance Studio and Wolf Kuhn Theatre

Penn State Altoona will offer a five-week Moving Worlds dance class series for adults with intellectual disabilities. Taught by Lauren Linder, the classes include a dynamic warm-up that safely prepares dancers to move, center exercises drawn from modern dance techniques, and lively across-the-floor dancing. Core foundations include open artistic expression, expansive movement, and autonomous and collective co-creation. Dancers using mobility devices, including walkers, wheelchairs, and canes, are welcome.

  • Time: 6:00–7:00 p.m.

Register for Moving Worlds

Designed for all levels and abilities, this ballet class provides instruction on barre exercises, alignment, flexibility, strength, and coordination as well as the fundamentals of turns, leaps, and dynamic traveling movements. Dancers are encouraged to wear athletic or dance attire and ballet shoes. Participants must be 18 or older.

Course Details

  • Cost: $50 for six one-and-a-half-hour classes
  • Dates: Sundays, October 4, 11, 18, and 25
  • Time: 10:00–11:30 a.m.
  • Location: Penn State Altoona, Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts, Dance Studio, Room 148.

Register for Ballet Classes

Penn State Altoona is offering a six-week songwriting course for adults beginning Oct. 5. These classes are designed for anyone interested in learning how to write their own songs. Any level of experience is welcome. Participants will dissect and discuss songs, complete writing exercises, and write songs of their own.

  • Cost: $30
  • Dates: Mondays, October 5, 12, 19, 26, and November 2 and 9
  • Time: 7:30–8:30 p.m.
  • Locations: Penn State Altoona, 117 Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts

Register for Songwriting Class

Designed for all levels and abilities for those over 18, this class covers the basics of classic jazz dance through strengthening and flexibility exercises, plus combinations that emphasize the polyrhythms inherent in jazz dance.

Course Details

  • Cost: $50 for six one-hour classes
  • Dates: Tuesdays, October 20 and 27, November 3, 10, 17, and 24
  • Time: 6:00–7:00 p.m.
  • Required Materials: Wear comfortable, movable clothing (tights and leotards are welcome but not required). You may bring jazz shoes or work barefoot.
  • Location: Penn State Altoona, Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts, Dance Studio, Room 148.

Registration for Jazz Classes

Instructed by KT Huckabee, classes will focus on floor work, coordination, and freedom of movement. No previous experience required, and those with experience will find new ways of moving. Participants must be 18 or older. Dancers should wear athletic or dance attire with bare feet.

  • Cost: $50 for six one-hour classes
  • Dates: Tuesdays, October 20 and 27, and November 3, 10, 17, and 24
  • Time: 7:15–8:15 p.m.
  • Location: Penn State Altoona, Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts, Dance Studio, Room 148.
