Requirements for the Vocal Studies Minor

The vocal studies minor focuses on the study of singing from the perspectives of performance, pedagogy, history, and acoustical science. Students study the human voice from several different perspectives through courses in applied voice (i.e., voice lessons), vocal pedagogy, music history and/or theory, and acoustics. Students also explore the art of vocal performance through participation in choral ensembles and/or musical productions.

COMMON REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR: (20 Credits)

PRESCRIBED COURSES (11 Credits)
You must take the following courses:

  • MUSIC 215: The Craft of Singing (GA, 3 credits)
  • Minimum two semesters (you make take more if you wish) of VOICE 110: Applied Voice (GA, 2 credits per semester for a total of 4 credits)
  • Minimum two semesters of Ivyside Pride (you make take more if you wish), which consists of two concurrent courses: MUSIC 104 (GA, 1 credit per semester) and VOICE 100 (GA, 1 credit per semester). 4 credits total.

TAKE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING (3 credits)

  • MUSIC 004: Film Music (GA, 3 credits)
  • MUSIC 005: Intro to Western Music History (GA, 3 credits)
  • MUSIC 007: Evolution of Jazz (GA or US, 3 credits)
  • MUSIC 008: Rudiments of Music (GA, 3 credits)
  • MUSIC 009: Intro to World Music (GA or IL, 3 credits)

TAKE TWO OF THE FOLLOWING (6 credits)

  • COMM 374: Audio Production (3 credits)*
  • COMM 436: Advanced Audio Production (3 credits)*
  • INART 494: Performance Project (3 credits)
  • MUSIC 404: Ivyside Pride Advanced (3 credits)
  • MUSIC 420: Songwriting (3 credits)*
  • MUSIC 497: Independent study (3 credits)
  • THEA 429: Theatre performance (3 credits)
  • Any other 300 or 400-level course that is approved by the Vocal Studies Minor adviser

*These courses are not offered at Penn State Altoona.
