“Monstrum,” a body of work by Visual Art Studies student Kai Deline, will be on display from April 10 through 19 in the McLanahan Gallery of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. A reception will be held on Thursday, April 10, at 4 p.m. in the Titelman Study of the Center. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
Deline is a visual artist who primarily works in acrylic, graphite, and digital design. Their work explores the complex experiences of being neurodivergent and queer through unrealistic, alien, and inhuman characters including monsters, creatures, and general freaks. Through the manipulation of skeletal structure, bright colors, and texture, Deline depicts the eccentricities of autism and differences in their creation of these characters. “I always felt like a bit of a freak, so I find a lot of solace in creating even more freaks. Being different is great and unique. Abolish conformity.”
Deline intends to graduate from Penn State Altoona in summer 2025. During their time at the college, they have participated in numerous student group exhibitions and other campus activities such as art club. They were a recipient of the Zoller Art Award in 2022.
