2013 Winter Plunge

A water temperature of 33.5 degrees could not deter approximately eight-five Penn State Altoona students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends from taking a Winter Plunge into the waters of Canoe Creek State Park on January 27, 2013. Organized by the college's Alumni Society, the inaugural frosty fundraiser was all in good fun, with net proceeds benefitting the Society's scholarship program and Penn State Altoona Benefitting THON. Sheetz, Inc. was the title sponsor of the event. C.

It was a lovely day to graduate! The sun was shining for the class of 2013 as they enjoyed their commencement ceremony, held Saturday, May 4 at the Jaffa Mosque in Altoona. About 230 of the 275 graduates attended the ceremony, at which Roger L. Williams, executive director of the Penn State Alumni Association and associate vice president, alumni relations, was the speaker.

Students, faculty, and staff gathered to show their Penn State pride on Monday, October 14, 2013, at the unfurling of the college's "Penn State Lives Banner" outside the Adler Athletic Complex. Similar banners were presented at all other Penn State locations as part of a University-wide effort. Give-aways included t-shirts, buttons, door hangers, window clings, and free Creamery ice cream!

Penn State Altoona held its spring 2014 commencement ceremony Saturday, May 10 at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona. 234 of the 280 graduates participated in the ceremony. Darrin Miller, open water swimmer and co-founder of the Forever Fund at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, was the speaker.

Penn State eliminates stream discharges with use of Living Filter

With the water shortages going on in the US southwest, most of us have taken the time to think about our water usage, but many give little or no regard as to what happens to our used water. When we flush a commode or pull the plug in the sink, that directly effects the water that will eventually come out the other end. When water enters the waste water treatment plant at the University Park campus, it is decontaminated and rendered almost pure. While it is safe to discharge into local streams, Penn State has been spraying the clean water onto open fields, recharging the water table.
