ALTOONA – An exhibition of work by Ivyside Juried Art Exhibition winner Barbara Marks will run
Jan. 11 - March 9, 2018, in the McLanahan Gallery of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The exhibition, Recollection, is free and open to the public. A reception will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11 in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Center.

Marks is a multidisciplinary artist based in Connecticut. She has been a resident artist in numerous places across the globe and has twice been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. Her work has been shown in many places including the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Massachusetts; Providence Art Club in Rhode Island; Painting Center, and First Street Gallery in New York City; Five Points Gallery, and The Chase Family Gallery in Connecticut. She is a Guild Artist at Silvermine Arts Center in Connecticut. Her work on paper is represented in the flatfile at Artspace New Haven. She is a Trustee of the Vermont Studio Center and a former board member of Artspace New Haven.

The works in Recollection are selected from a larger series of smallish, square, colorful paintings. Marks's imagery is rooted in observation, suggesting interior spaces, landscapes, and objects. For her subject matter, Marks looks to the ordinary and local. “What motivates me is my desire to re-present an ordinary moment—in a painting— by manipulating color, shape, and composition in such a way that the possibility of multiple interpretations (or reads) engages the viewer and encourages closer investigation.”

Marks has completed 112 paintings to date. She is growing the series into an aggregate composed of hundreds of small-scale paintings that, when installed as a whole, will assume a monumental scale and, at the same time, invite intimate interactions.

The Galleries are open Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and before and during all performances. For further information, call the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts at 814-949-5452.
