Penn State Altoona sophomore libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios has earned two NEAC Defensive Player of the Week awards and one ECAC Division III South Region Defensive Player of the Week award over the first two weeks of the men's volleyball season.

Senior guard Javon Wilson (Washington, D.C./T.C. Williams) became the sixth player in Penn State Altoona men’s basketball to reach 1,000 career points in the Lions’ win over Mount Aloysius on Feb. 8. Wilson scored 30 points in the game and currently ranks fifth on the team’s all-time scoring list with 1,024 points in his four-year collegiate basketball career.

Freshman swimmer Allen Shmurak (Newtown, Pennsylvania/Council Rock North) was selected the AMCC Men’s Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 23 for his performance in the Lions’ tri-meet with Bethany and Frostburg on Jan. 21. In that meet, Shmurak had individual first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke, and he was also part of the first place 200-yard freestyle relay team.

In the first two weeks of the men’s volleyball season, Lions sophomore libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Samuel Clemens) was twice named the North Eastern Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, and he was also selected the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Division III South Region Defensive Player of the Week. He currently leads all NEAC players in digs (125) and digs per set (4.31).

Lady Lions junior forward Megan Wheeler (Lilly, Pennsylvania/Penn Cambria) was awarded the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week status on Jan. 23. The previous week, she averaged 27.0 points per game, 11.0 rebounds per game, and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 57.5 percent from the field to help her team go 1-1 in AMCC play.

Women’s bowling:

Penn State Altoona went 2-11 in the Saint Francis University (Pa.) Red Flash Invitational on Jan. 27-29, finishing in 15th place overall. Senior Brea Suchonic (Butler, Pennsylvania/Butler) finished 31st out of 96 individual bowlers with a team-best 883 total pins and an average of 176.6 in the traditional team matches, and she posted a baker format average of 13.46.

Women’s swimming:

Frostsburg State University 118, Penn State Altoona 71

Freshmen Emily Booz (Berwyn, Pennsylvania/Conestoga) and Paetyn Zeamer (Manheim, Pennsylvania/Manheim Central) each had an individual win and relay first place in the Lady Lions’ tri-meet with Bethany and Frostburg on Jan. 21. Booz won the 200-yard IM, and Zeamer was first in the 100-yard butterfly. Both swimmers helped their squad prevail in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
