What is Engaged Scholarship?
As a Penn State Altoona student, you’ll have a multitude and variety of opportunities to participate in engaged scholarship activities. Engaged scholarship consists of out-of-classroom academic experiences that complement in-class learning. Engaged scholarship activities vary widely, but common examples include study abroad/study away (both domestic and international travel), academic internships/clinical work, research/creative activities, and community-based studies.
These academic activities utilize high impact practices that help to broaden and deepen student engagement with their education, strengthen their relationship to their faculty, enhance and refine their career path, and often lead to life-long learning and personal growth. By broadening education to activities outside the traditional classroom, students often experience an enhanced sense of social responsibility, improvement in critical and analytical thinking, and other key educational outcomes.
