Program Description

This 8 day program will allow students to experience Havana, Cuba.

Nursing students will be immersed in Cuban culture and the healthcare system. You will visit a number of healthcare facilities and attend guest lectures on the local health system, challenges and solutions in healthcare and healthcare delivery, as well as health promotion. Service-learning is a component of the program, along with a number of hands on activities like dance lessons and cooking.

Academic Requirements

Students will be responsible for the following:

  • GPA of 2.5 or greater
  • Must be enrolled in NURS 415 or NURS 450B -  Fall 2017
    • Satisfactory completion of study abroad orientation and preparatory meeting

  • Pre-departure orientation including program expectations
  • Introductory briefing on country, culture, academic program, health and safety
  • Group transfer to/from airport
  • Welcome dinner, farewell dinner and three group lunches
  • Seven (7) nights of Casa Particular accommodations in the Vedado neighborhood within walking distance to the University of Havana and Study Center.  Breakfast and dinner included.
  • Two (2) guest lectures: Contemporary Cuba and Cuba Music
  • Five (5) cultural activities, admission and transportation included:
    • Walking tour of Old Havana
    • Cuban Art Museum
    • Outing to Fabrica de arte art gallery/club/music venue
    • Salsa lesson
    • 1830 Club for Salsa Dancing
  • Eight (8) co-curricular site visits/activities, transportation included
    • Half day trip to
      • Mariano Neighborhood Clinic
      • Alamar Organic Farm: Food security/access
      • Las Terrazas to visit a rural healthcare clinic
    • Visits to
      • Cuban Neighborhood Clinic
      • La Castellana
      • Maternal Health Center
      • Elderly Home
      • ELAM (Latin American school of Medicine)

  1. $135 -Passport
  2. $150 - Immunizations
  3. $150 - Bus fare to/from airport (BWI)
  4. $9 - required HTH International Insurance
  5. $150 - Personal expenses

Registration Process

Register with the Education Abroad Office

Register by July 21, 2017

  • A limited number of participants will be accepted.
  • Your judicial and academic records will be checked as a part of the registration process.

Deadlines

  • July 21 -  Register with the Education Abroad Office
  • August 21 – Waivers AND Passports due to the Office of Education Abroad
  • September 21 – Global Programs/Travel Safety Network (TSN) Pre-Departure requirements
