New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation

After paying the acceptance fees, New Student Orientation (NSO) sends an email to initiate your transition to Penn State. The message will be sent to the email address entered on your admission application. The first two steps involve completing an Educational Planning Survey and taking an on-line ALEKS Math Assessment. The math results are used as an academic advising tool when you schedule classes later.

Approximate times when NSO begins to email first-year students who paid the acceptance fees:

  • Spring Admission: The second week of November
  • Summer or Fall Admission: The first week of March

Penn State Altoona's Wilbur K. Kraybill Academic Advising Center will be notified when your Educational Planning Survey and ALEKS Math Assessment have been completed. You'll then receive instructions on how to register for a date to attend a student orientation, advising, and registration session. This session is a mandatory, one day academic orientation program for all first-year students and is the first phase of New Student Orientation. Program details are available on the NSO web page.

The sessions are scheduled for the last two weeks of June and the second and third weeks of July for summer and fall admits. Spring admits participate in the NSO session in January during the week before classes begin. Transfer students will receive information on how to arrange a meeting with an academic advisor who will assist you with scheduling classes.
