Applying for Admissions

Step One: Set up Your MyPennState Profile

The first step of the application process is to create a MyPennState profile on the Undergraduate Admissions site, if you do not have one already. MyPennState is where future students can access the online application.

Step Two: Access the Application

While you can create a MyPennState profile at any time, the application for fall/summer admission becomes available on September 1. It is recommended that you complete your application no later than November 30.

Step Three: Start Your Penn State Application in MyPennState

Click Apply Online to start your Penn State application. Before starting, you can also review the Applying Online Worksheet for more details and helpful hints about the application.

Your application work can be saved at each step of the process by clicking the Save and Continue button at the bottom of the page. This feature will allow you to move back and forth within the application or log off and return to complete your application at a later time.

You’ll choose your first and alternate choice campus; choosing an alternate choice campus may avoid delays in the application process.

Step Four: Submit Your Application

The application requires a nonrefundable application fee of $65 (unless it was waived for visiting our campus). Be sure to complete the last step after "Summary and Review," which finalizes payment of your fee, and be certain it is successfully submitted. Once the application is submitted, you can verify its completion by accessing your MyPennState profile.

At the end of your application, we will ask you to print out a counselor form. You should take this form to your high school counselor to complete and send to us along with your official high school transcript.

Step Five: Submit Required Application Materials

In order to complete your Penn State application, the following materials are needed:

  • Application
  • Official high school transcript(s)
  • Official test scores: SAT (code #2660) or ACT (code #3656)

High school transcripts must be mailed or faxed directly to Penn State Undergraduate Admissions from each high school you attended. The fax number is 814-863-7590 and the mailing address is Penn State Undergraduate Admissions, 201 Shields Building, University Park, PA 16802. Do not send official transcripts to Penn State Altoona.

Step Six: Check Your Application Status in MyPennState

You can always check the status of your application in MyPennState. We will communicate with you via MyPennState and through a series of emails regarding the missing items for your application. When everything has arrived, you will see a status in MyPennState confirming the completion of your application.

Please note that it is your responsibility to check on the status of your application and send us any missing materials.

Step Seven: Receive Your Admissions Decision

Once we have reached a decision regarding your application, we will update your status in MyPennState (domestic students also receive their decision via mail).

First-Year students are not guaranteed on-campus housing at Penn State Altoona because interest exceeds the number of first-year spaces, which are allocated on the first-come, first serve basis. Please refer to the Important On-Campus Housing Reminders insert in your offer of admission packet for additional information.

Advanced Standing (Transfer) students should call Penn State Altoona’s Housing Office at 814- 949-5713 after receiving an offer of admission to discuss the availability of on-campus housing.

All students planning to live off campus must make their own housing arrangements. Financial aid exceeding direct Penn State charges, i.e. tuition and fees, can be used to pay for off-campus living expenses. Visit the Off Campus Living page for more information.

Financial Aid

Apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available in early January at Penn State’s recommended filing date is February 15. You do not need to receive an admissions decision before applying for financial aid. The FAFSA code for all Penn State campuses is 003329. Additional financial aid information, including scholarship information, is available on the Student Aid site.
