Centering Black Joy: The Edification of Experiences of Children’s Literature for Young Readers
Dr. Shanetia P. Clark will explore the representation of Black joy in contemporary children’s literature and its transformative impact on young readers. She examines how narratives celebrating Black resilience, culture, and creativity foster positive identity formation. The discussion highlights the intersection of children’s literature, the representation of Black joy, and its impact on young readers. Dr. Clark argues that centering Black joy in children’s literature is not only a critical act of representation, but also a pedagogical tool for fostering inclusive literacy practices that celebrate diversity and shared humanity.
